Terms  and definitions for the vocab quiz:

Nutrients – 6 basic chemical substance found in food that your body needs

Carbohydrates – help us keep warm, give us energy; if we don’t use them they turn into starches and then fat

Starch – a carbohydrate found in rice, pasta, flour, potatoes, etc.

Sucrose – another name for sugar

Protein – helps our body grow and repair, makes new cells

Saturated fats – from animals that give us energy and heat (less healthy)

Unsaturated fats – from plants that give us energy and heat (more healthy)

Visible fats – we can see them like butter, bacon, grease

Invisible fats – hidden fats that aren’t seen like in cookies, cakes, ice cream

Vitamins – help our body use carbohydrates, protein and fats from food

Vitamin A – good for bones, skin, hair, organs and our eyes (carrots, butter, etc)

Vitamin B – good for our skin, nerves and blood (egg yolk, fish, etc)

Vitamin C – good for teeth, gums and bones; fight infections (oranges, broccoli, etc)

Vitamin D – good for bones and teeth (sun, milk)

Minerals – help with basic functions, growth and repair

Calcium – builds strong bones and teeth (dairy products, green veggies, etc)

Iron – makes red blood cells and helps carry oxygen (dried fruit, red meats, etc)

Sodium – salt – keeps the right amount of water in our bodies (veggies)
